​10th EAST ASIA SECURITY OUTLOOK (EASO) SEMINAR

MUARA NAVAL BASE, Thursday, 9 November 2017 – The Ministry of Defence held the 10th East Asia Security Outlook Seminar at Naval Training Centre, Muara Naval Base today. Present as the Guest of Honour and Keynote Speaker was the Deputy Minister of Defence. First Admiral (Retired) Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Abdul Aziz bin Haji Mohd Tamit.

In his keynote address, the Deputy Minister of Defence shared his views on major global trends including major power dynamics and the cooperative security architecture in the region. He also touched on non-traditional security challenges, including the evolving threats of terrorism and of cyberspace that would shape the future global outlook.

He underscored the achievements of ASEAN which had brought peace and stability for fifty years, as well as the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting framework, working in tandem with ASEAN, to provide a platform for engagement and practical cooperation.

With these prevalent developments and opportunities to promote cooperation, this year’s EASO Seminar topics revolved mainly around three main themes: East Asia’s Dynamics and Relations, Regional Security Environment and Cyber Security.

The panel included distinguished speakers from Department of National Defense (Philippines), Massey University (New Zealand), Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS, Singapore), University of New South Wales (Australia) and Defence Cyber Organisation (Singapore).

Also present at the event were Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih bin Abdullah, the Commander of Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF), Captain (Retired) Dato Paduka Abd Rahman bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, RBN, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Service Commanders, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Technology and Development) and officers from the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Brunei Armed Forces.

Officers from the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and other Ministries, as well as the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), were also invited to attend the seminar.

The event was concluded with the presentation of tokens of appreciation to the speakers by Captain (Retired) Dato Paduka Abd Rahman bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, RBN, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence.

The EASO Seminar is an annual event that is organised by the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies since 2009. It provides a platform for discussion among local defence and security officials on regional security-related issues.




EAST ASIA SECURITY OUTLOOK (EASO) SEMINAR KALI KE-10

MUARA, Khamis, 9 November 2017 – Kementerian Pertahanan telah mengadakan East Asia Security Outlook (EASO) Seminar yang ke-10 pada hari ini di Pusat Latihan Tentera Laut, Muara. Hadir selaku Tetamu Kehormat dan Penceramah Ucaptama ialah Timbalan Menteri Pertahanan Laksamana Pertama (B) Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Abdul Aziz bin Haji Mohd Tamit.

Dalam ucaptama beliau, Timbalan Menteri Pertahanan berkongsi pandangan mengenai trend utama di peringkat global termasuk hubungan negara kuasa utama dan seni bina keselamatan kerjasama di rantau ini. Beliau juga membincangkan cabaran keselamatan bukan tradisional, termasuk ancaman-ancaman keganasan dan ruang siber yang akan membentuk prospek global masa depan.

Beliau menekankan pencapaian ASEAN yang telah membawa keamanan dan kestabilan selama lima puluh tahun, serta rangka kerja Mesyuarat Menteri-Menteri Pertahanan ASEAN, yang bekerja seiring dengan ASEAN, untuk menyediakan platform bagi negara-negara ASEAN untuk mengukuhkan persahabatan dan menjalinkan kerjasama praktikal.

Dengan perkembangan tersebut dan peluang yang meluas untuk menggalakkan kerjasama, topik seminar EASO pada tahun ini telah merangkumi tiga tema utama iaitu dinamika dan hubungan Asia Timur, Persekitaran Keselamatan Serantau dan Keselamatan Siber.

Panel penceramah seminar tersebut termasuk penceramah dari Department of National Defense (Republik Filipina), Universiti Massey (New Zealand), Universiti Chulalongkorn (Thailand), S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS, Republik Singapura), Universiti New South Wales (Australia) dan Defence Cyber Organisation (Republik Singapura).

Turut hadir pada seminar ini ialah Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Mejar Jeneral Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih bin Abdullah, Pemerintah Angkatan Bersenjata Diraja Brunei (ABDB), Kepten (B) Dato Paduka Abd Rahman bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, TLDB, Setiausaha Tetap, Kementerian Pertahanan, Pemerintah-Pemerintah Angkatan Tentera, Timbalan Setiausaha Tetap (Teknologi dan Pembangunan), pegawai-pegawai dari Kementerian Pertahanan dan ABDB. Turut hadir ialah pegawai-pegawai dari Jabatan Perdana Menteri, Kementerian Hal Ehwal Luar Negeri dan Perdagangan dan Kementerian lain, serta Pasukan Polis Diraja Brunei.

Seminar EASO ini diakhiri dengan penyerahan tanda penghargaan kepada panel penceramah oleh Kepten (B) Dato Paduka Abd Rahman bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, TLDB, Setiausaha Tetap, Kementerian Pertahanan.

Seminar EASO adalah acara tahunan yang dianjurkan oleh Institut Pengajian Pertahanan dan Strategik Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah sejak tahun 2009. Ia menyediakan landasan bagi pegawai-pegawai pertahanan dan sekuriti tempatan untuk membincangkan isu-isu berkaitan keselamatan serantau.
