Han, you bring up some good points that illustrate the futility of the alpha-beta construct.

If you define an alpha by one set of criteria and I define them by another, there cannot be an alpha because there’s too much conflict. As we’ve seen in the comments, Charlie Sheen is being called a “faux alpha”. How much more alpha could you get than a guy that’s rich, successful, powerful, has a full head of hair and gets laid at the drop of a hat? But he’s only a “faux alpha”?

If there’s a sexual alpha, fine, but why make up a term when you can simply call them a stud? That’s what they are doing, after all. Why create a hierarchy and imply that the “sexual beta” is somehow lesser?

The tool-maker is very much alive in all of us. The tools that we make might have changed, but we are still specialists that make a very important contribution to society.

The plumber doesn’t make a toilet, but he does make a functioning water system. That’s the tool he makes.

The lawyer doesn’t appear to actually make anything. Where’s his stone hatchet or tanned hides? Of course, if you look at how a lawyer uses words to smooth relationships between parties, you can see that he’s actually building an agreement. He uses tools (words) to make other tools (agreements/contracts) that keep parties honest and accountable, thus making society run more smoothly. At least, they do in theory.

The electrician? He’s using tools to build a functioning power system in your house. Yes, he didn’t build the entire structure, but only because no one man can. He’s using tools from other tool-makers and then building the tool which is the system in your house that allows you to run appliances. You use his tool to make toast and coffee in the morning.
