No.2 Wing was established on the 1st of September 1983 in what was then known as the Air Defence Battery. On March 24th 1995,
it was reassigned to the Royal Brunei Air Force and renamed as Air
Defence Squadron. Four years later, with the procurement of its Mistral
System it has expanded to become an Air Regiment that is composed of 38
Squadron (now known as 238 squadron) and 33 Squadron (233 Squadron). In
that same year, Airfield Ground Defence was incorporated into Air
Regiment from Admin Wing of the RBAirF. No.2 Wing aims towards enhancing
its operational capabilities and plans to provide 24/7 Air Defence
cover over Brunei’s sovereign airspace in its future endeavour.
ROLES
- To provide air defence for Brunei Darussalam airspace from air threats.
- To provide defence for Royal Brunei Air Force Base.
238 SQUADRON
The squadron operates a Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORAD) weapon system, Mistral. It is base in Berakas Garrison.
233 SQUADRON
It
was initially based in Penanjong Garrison and used to operate Short
Range Air Defence system, Rapier FSB1. However, the system was
decommissioned in 2010. The squadron became a supporting squadron to 238
squadron and whilst preparing for its new Air Defence System.
236 SQUADRON
Located
at RBAirF base, its key role is to protect the base from both air and
ground threats. They conduct Patrols, Observation Post, Quick reaction
Force, Anti Riot, Cordon and Forward Operating Base.
ENGINEERING SQN
Located
at Berakas Garison. The squadron provides a supporting role in ensuring
operational readiness of the Air Defence Squadron through maintenance.
