​MINISTRY OF DEFENCE PARTICIPATES IN 23rd TOKYO DEFENSE FORUM

TOKYO, JAPAN, Thursday, 14 March 2019 – The Ministry of Defense of Japan held its annual Tokyo Defense Forum 2019. In its 23rd edition, this year’s Forum attracted 30 entities including ASEAN Member States, China, US, ASEAN Secretariat and other leading proponents of security agenda.

The Forum is held from 11 to 15 March 2019 and was chaired by Mr. Hideo Suzuki, Director General for International Affairs. Leading Brunei Darussalam’s delegation was Deputy Permanent Secretary, Haji Mohd Zakaria bin Haji Serudin.

The Forum was officiated by His Excellency Yasunori Nishida, Vice-Minister for International Affairs, Ministry of Defense, Japan. In his remarks, he reiterated the Government of Japan’s role to bring a better understanding on security matters around the Asia-Pacific region. There were two sessions at this year’s Forum namely “Security Challenges in the Indo-Pacific Region” and “Changing Security Challenges and the Way Ahead”.

At the working lunch, participants had the opportunity to listen to Dr. Akihito Tanaka from National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) who presented his views on “Security Challenges in the Indo-Pacific Region”. On 13 March 2019, His Honourable Mr. Takeshi Iwaya, Minister of Defense, Japan hosted a dinner reception for the participants.

A brief visit to military facilities owned by Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JSDF) and cultural visit were also arranged by the organiser. At the sideline, the Deputy Permanent Secretary held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Hideo Suzuki, Director General for International Affairs, Bureau of Defense Policy Ministry of Defense to discuss bilateral matters where both sides mutually agreed to strengthen relationship.

Tokyo Defense Forum (TDF) has been annually held by Japan’s Ministry of Defense since 1996. The purpose of the TDF is to contribute to the stability of the Asia-Pacific region by providing a forum of candid exchange of views for senior defence officials in charge of policy or defence exchanges in the region, thereby deepening mutual understanding of each other's defence policies, increasing the transparency among participating countries, and building the ground for international cooperation.


KEMENTERIAN PERTAHANAN HADIRI TOKYO DEFENSE FORUM KE-23

TOKYO, JEPUN, Khamis, 14 Mac 2019 – Kementerian Pertahanan Jepun mengadakan acara tahunan Tokyo Defense Forum buat kali ke-23. Forum tahun ini menarik penyertaan lebih 30 perwakilan terdiri dari negara-negara ahli ASEAN, Republik Rakyat China, Amerika Syarikat, Sekretariat ASEAN dan agensi-agensi sekuriti dan pertahanan seluruh dunia.

Forum diadakan dari 11 hingga 15 Mac 2019 dan dipengerusikan oleh Tuan Hideo Suzuki, Director General for International Affairs. Delegasi Brunei Darussalam ke forum tersebut diketuai oleh Haji Zakaria bin Haji Sarudin, Timbalan Setiausaha Tetap Pertahanan.

Forum berkenaan dirasmikan oleh Yasunori Nishida, Vice-Minister for International Affair, Kementerian Pertahanan Jepun. Antara lain, beliau menegaskan peranan kerajaan Jepun di dalam memupuk kefahaman mengenai keselamatan rantau Asia Pasifik. Forum tahun ini dibahagi kepada dua sesi iaitu “Security Challenges in the Indo-Pacific Region” dan “Changing Security Challenges and the Way Ahead”.

Pada sesi makan tengah hari, satu taklimat telah diketengahkan oleh Dr. Akihito Tanaka dari National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS). Dr. Tanaka membentangkan kertas kerja bertajuk “Security Challenges in the Indo-Pacific Region”. Pada 13 Mac 2019, Yang Berhormat Takeshi Iwaya, Menteri Pertahanan Jepun telah menjadi hos kepada sesi makan malam bersama para peserta TDF.

Pihak penganjur telah mengaturkan lawatan ke beberapa kemudahan-kemudahan tentera JMSDF dan juga lawatan kebudayaan. Di samping menghadiri Forum berkenaan, Timbalan Setiausaha Tetap juga mengadakan perjumpaan dua hala bersama Yang Mulia Tuan Hideo Suzuki, Director General for International Affairs, Bureau of Defense Policy Ministry of Defense bagi membincangkan hal ehwal kerjasama pertahanan dua hala.

Tokyo Defense Forum diadakan setiap tahun oleh Kementerian Pertahanan Jepun sejak 1996. Peranan TDF adalah sebagai sumbangan kepada kestabilan rantau Asia-Pasifik dengan menyediakan platform bagi perbincangan dan pertukaran pendapatan dikalangan pegawai-pegawai kanan pertahanan. Forum berkenaan juga menggalakan kesefahaman bersama terhadap dasar pertahanan masing-masing, seterusnya meningkatkan transparency dan membina asas bagi kerjasama antarabangsa.
